Browse the US market for small budget camper trailers and it won’t be long before you see the name “Runaway Campers”. Founded in 2012, the Florida-based company offers some of the cheapest camper trailers around—all models start under $10,000. So it’s no surprise that the company offers one of the most affordable off-road mini campers on the market, the Venturist XS. The Small XS is a rolling gear garage with an available tent top that easily fits into an ultralight, towable-anywhere basecamp.
The Venturist XS launched earlier this year as a smaller, more affordable alternative to the original Venturist, and Runaway has been offering $9,650-plus all-terrain cubes for years. The XS measures just 10 feet (3 meters) from tip of tongue to rear hinge, making it one of the most compact small off-road trailers on the market, compared to the SportsRig TrailStomper – length if not tire width. At 750 lbs (340 kg), the Venturist XS is also surprisingly light.
The XS may be small, but it packs enough room for the cooking and camping essentials you need while traveling. The base trailer is essentially an empty shell with a full-size storage box accessed through a wide rear hatch and doors on either side. Pack up all the gear you need for your trip and head out.
The boxy, cavernous body of the Venturist XS is mounted on a tubular steel frame with a tongue that passes right through the rear to form a hitch receiver. A Timbren axleless suspension with 4-inch lifts connects the chassis to 17-inch Alpha wheels that spin on centers of 33-inch BFGoodrich all-terrain tires. This suspension and tire combination provides a full 20 inches (51 cm) of ground clearance, ensuring the XS can roll anywhere a trailer can pass. Strong treaded fenders extend over beefy tires.
To transform the Venturist XS from gear support to a full-fledged camper, buyers need to add a roof tent, either their own or a new one. Runaway sells a $450 roof rack for this purpose and offers a range of RTTs from 23Zero.Buyers can also buy their own RTT model if they choose something cheaper like $1,200 Classic Softshell From Ironman or $1,209 leader, they can still walk away with less than $10,000. The base Venturist is $7,845.
One thing that may quickly deter buyers from paying less than $10,000 is an enticing options list that includes a Rhino Rack awning, a RoadShower roof-mounted shower system, and a variety of cargo racks and brackets. The Venturist is available to order now.
