Recent advances in e-paper technology have enabled displays to move beyond e-readers and into tablet PCs. Onyx International already offers a 13.3-inch monochrome tablet and now adds a 10.3-inch color E Ink tablet.

The Boox Tab Ultra C is essentially a color version of the monochrome Tab Ultra ePaper tablet the company launched last year — and it recently launched a iF DESIGN AWARDThe new model is based on E Ink’s Kaleido 3 color technology, which is reportedly richer than the Plus series used in color e-readers such as the PocketBook InkPad Color. This translates to a touch-enabled 10.3-inch display with a color resolution of 1,240 x 930 (150 ppi) and a grayscale resolution of 2,480 x 1,860 (300 ppi).

The unit includes Boox Super Refresh chops for smooth and responsive vision, benefits from automatic screen rotation capable of displaying 4,096 colors, and has integrated warm/cool ComfortGaze front lights for after-dark use.

A Qualcomm octa-core processor and “exclusive GPU” run the show, backed by 4GB of RAM and 128GB of internal UFS 2.1 storage with microSD expansion (plus 10GB of free cloud storage by signing up for an Onyx account — though the tablet also comes with third-party cloud and sync services compatible).

Onyx International

Android 11 is also ready, and the device supports multiple document formats, including PDF, DOCX, EPUB, RTF, and HTML, as well as major image formats, as well as WAV and MP3 audio. Dual speakers and dual microphones also feature, there’s dual-band Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 5.0, and a 6,300mAh lithium-polymer battery — which should allow for extended periods away from a wall outlet, but no estimates were provided.

The E Ink tablet features a 16-megapixel rear-facing camera for document scanning and is compatible with third-party photo/scanning apps — “offering a variety of options for easily capturing and managing documents.” It comes with the Pen2 Pro Stylus that offers 4,096 levels of pressure sensitivity and features a built-in eraser.

The Tab Ultra C is available to pre-order now for $599.99, and it can be had with an optional magnetic 2-in-1 keyboard cover for easy typing.
