Nigeria’s central bank has severely limited the amount of cash people can withdraw from ATMs, sparking protests from some of the country’s lawmakers.
The move could wreak havoc in a country where most people are unbanked and use cash instead of electronic payments. Godwin Emefiele, governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, told the media that the policy aims to drive Nigerians to use cashless payment methods.
