For at least a few years now, Gerber has been developing a line of knives and multitools aimed specifically at campers. Now it’s gathered several handy camp tools into the Around Camp Kit. New for 2023, this set makes it easier to store your camp kitchen or picnic basket, bringing together a handy pair of multi-tools and a mini cleaver. It won’t pitch your tent for you, but it will help you with equally important tasks like opening your first beer or wine and preparing dinner.
The Around Camp Kit is based on two camp-friendly multitools that Gerber has introduced over the past few years. The Armbar Cork is a figurative and literal twist on the Armbar series, mixing an accompanying wine waiter’s corkscrew with a lever arm and foil cutter into a slim eight-tool handle that also includes a one-handed 2.5-in. Blades, Spring Scissors, Pry Bars, Hammer Blades, Can Openers/Wrappers and Bottle Openers. This compact tool fits easily in your pocket for use outside of camp.
We’re a little surprised Gerber didn’t go with more camp-specific Stake Out multi-tools for this particular kit, but the bottle opener is one of those tools that’s easy to forget when packing and can be devastating when lost on a camping trip blow. We’re sure Armbar corks will be a hit when needed.
Another multi-tool in the Around Camp kit is also dedicated to food and drink. Complet includes four individual tools stacked in one slim package. The fork and spoon are self-explanatory, while the double-edged spatula features serrated and smooth silicone edges. The spatula can also be used in conjunction with a fork or spoon to form a pair of tongs for turning meat or pulling food off the grill. The last hitch tool looks like a basic bottle/can opener, but also includes a vegetable peeler and bag opener.
To round out the kit and give campers more cutting and chopping power than a pocketknife, Gerber added the Tri-Tip Mini Cleaver. Double-edged cleavers combine a beveled front edge for scraping duties and a fine-edged main blade for chopping duties. The machined aluminum handle is textured for improved grip.
We like the simplicity and compactness of Gerber’s kit, which is perfect for all types of activities, from basic car camping to overland, to light camping styles like backpacking and canoe camping. One of our misses was the lack of a carrying case to really combine the three tools into one carry-on bag. But the $100 price tag saves buyers $27 off retail compared to buying all three tools individually, so that might be reason enough for many campers to add it to their gear closet.Of course we’re thinking about wearing it our Father’s Day wish list.
