Efforts to limit teens’ favorite e-cigarette flavors may fail as new brands enter the market, a new report says.

Fruit, candy, spice and dessert flavors of e-cigarettes, long popular with underage smokers, have proliferated in recent years. data Analysis by Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, CDC Foundation, and Truth Initiative.

Flavored e-cigarettes accounted for 41.3% of e-cigarette sales at U.S. retail stores in December 2022, up from 29.2% in January 2020, the groups found. Overall sales of e-cigarettes in the U.S. grew by about 47% over the same period.

Between January 2022 and December 2022, disposable e-cigarette sales as a percentage of total sales increased from 24.7% to 51.8%.

They now account for more than half of the U.S. e-cigarette market.

Nicotine is highly addictive and can damage the teenage brain, which continues to develop until around age 25, according to the CDC. Additionally, the agency found that the most popular brands of disposable e-cigarettes on the market — Puff Bar, Elf Bar and Breeze Smoke — were not FDA-approved and illegal. Last year, the FDA ordered Elf Bar and Breeze Smoke to be withdrawn from the U.S. market, according to the CDC.
