hello, welcome back faira podcast about the business of startups, where we unpack the numbers and nuance behind the headlines.

marianne and Alex They’re back, and once again using the TechCrunch roster for expert opinion. This week, we are fortunate to have Kirsten Korosek Back to podcasts. She’s TechCrunch’s Director of Mobile, host your own podcast One of our favorite humans.

all the cool kids are Fill out the Equity Audience Survey. We want to hear from you!

The summer slowdown is far from happening, so we still have a ton of stuff to pore over. Luckily we had six employees on hand! Here is the outline:

  • Deals of the week: Mary Ann wants to talk about Robinhood’s acquisition of X1, a deal that looks like a bargain, but we lack enough data to be confident; Alex wants to repeat Dropbox’s new AI fund, even if it does feel a little small; The team provided notes on the launch of Cruise’s latest app. Even if Mary Ann and Alex can’t agree on self-driving cars, we all think cruise buses are cute.
  • Twitch and Reddit try to balance corporate needs with community power: Building on our recent episodes that delved into the creator economy, the staff tackled the latest on Twitch (a new creator-company revenue split) and Reddit (where the battle between the company and its superusers continues to rage). It’s been feeling more like a hot war than a cold war on the internet lately, with platforms trying to find a way to keep revenue growing without alienating those who provide their services.
  • The power of not drinking: How big is the non-alcoholic beverage market? Granted, a smaller market than vodka, but we were curious. There’s also a new app on the market that helps people find friends who don’t drink, and we’re intrigued.

Thanks so much Kirsten for stopping by and we’ll be chatting with you Monday morning!
