If you’ve never used LinkedIn before, it can be a little overwhelming. That’s why we’ve created a 5-step quick guide to getting started with LinkedIn.

Check out our 5-step quick guide below on how to optimize your LinkedIn profile for professional success:

Step 1: Update your resume

The first step is to make sure your actual resume is updated. Once complete, you can transfer the data to your LinkedIn profile.

You always want the same information on your resume as on your LinkedIn profile. Recruiters and hiring managers love consistency!

Step 2: Change your privacy settings

Your resume is done – awesome! Now, it’s time to start adding information to your LinkedIn profile.

Before adding anything, though, make sure to change your privacy settings so your profile activity isn’t visible until you’ve finished filling out your profile. You don’t want your contacts to see every change you make to your profile!

Step 3: Add your information

Once you’ve adjusted your privacy settings, you can start adding content to your LinkedIn profile. In addition to adding information from your resume, you can showcase visual achievements like PDFs, online articles, and images. Remember your personal brand!

warn: Nothing in your profile is suspicious, but too much is too much. Do your best to balance it and include the must-haves.

Step 4: Optimize your profile

After adding information to your LinkedIn profile, you must go over it and optimize it so that it’s easier for people (employers, recruiters, and contacts) to find and read.

Recruiters and hiring managers conduct keyword searches based on skill sets. Your goal is to optimize your LinkedIn profile with specific keywords related to your skills so that you appear in their results.

Once you optimize your LinkedIn profile properly, you’ll start getting more opinions from recruiters and hiring managers.

Step 5: Make it part of your routine

After optimizing your profile, you need to keep it fresh. The more you engage with LinkedIn, the more it rewards you. It lets you search, find relevant people you can connect with, and more. Therefore, you should make sure that you are a regular and active user.

“The more you put in, the more you get out of it,” JT O’Donnell, Founder and CEO of Work It DAILY.

Make an effort to update your information monthly. You should also stay active every day by sharing articles, participating in groups, and staying in touch. This is the surest way to build your personal brand and stand out to recruiters on the platform.

Follow these five steps and you’ll be off to a great start on LinkedIn!
